MOUNTAIN BIKE TOURS NEAR CHIANG MAI

An hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, the Mae Wang valley is nestled in the shadow of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak (2565m). As soon as you turn off the well-travelled road to Doi Inthanon, it becomes as remote as it gets: there are just a few boutique resorts, and hill-tribe villages rarely visited by outsiders. To preserve its natural beauty, the area has recently been designates a national park.

The abundance of single-track trails linking the secluded settlements and the slightly cooler climate make the area exceptionally suitable for mountain biking, with the highlight for the most adventurous riders an unforgettable descent from Thailand’s highest ridge.

Our 2 and 3 day trips start and end in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai, Mae Wang and Inthanon 3 day Ultimate Ride

Conditions were perfect. We had a great group of riders and our usual professional support staff. Check out this awesome short vid of some of the trails on this trip.

Highlights

  • Hike through the forest up to 2200 m on Doi Inthanon, and ride down a narrow ridge back to civilization. The best bit: your bikes are transported up to the trailhead !
  • After a morning enjoying the finest single-track, tuck into a sumptuous lunch in the shadow of Watchirathan waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park
  • Blast down a killer descent in Mae Wang, then do it all over again

Trails

  • Mae Wang: a morning of undulating and at times challenging single-track, followed by an incredible descent along a ridge. In the afternoon, shuttle up to the highest point of the morning ride and repeat the descent
  • The Ridge: hike up to ridge and a scenic viewpoint at 2250 m elevation while our bikes are taken up there by porters. Tackle the steep, sometimes technical, but definitely unforgettable descent down to a village for lunch. A challenging climb followed by a super fast and flowy descent in the afternoon
  • The River Bed: a gentle climb through beautiful forest to a remote village, where the fun starts: some of the finest single-track all the way down to a dried out riverbed, then an undulating dirt road out to the Doi Inthanon National Park. The shorter afternoon ride shares the best parts of the descent
